Accuracy of hysteroscopy in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer and hyperplasia: A systematic quantitative review
-
Clark TJ, Voit D, Gupta JK, et al. Accuracy of hysteroscopy in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer and hyperplasia: a systematic quantitative review. JAMA 2002; 288:1610-1621. Although this paper was published just before 2003, it deserves highlighting because it is one of the world's largest diagnostic accuracy reviews including over 26000 women. It rigorously evaluates the accuracy of hysteroscopy in diagnosing endometrial cancer and hyperplasia in symptomatic pre- and postmenopausal women.

Cost-effectiveness of transvaginal sonography and saline infused sonography in the evaluation of menorrhagia
-
Dijkhuizen FP, Mol BW, Bongers MY, et al. Cost-effectiveness of transvaginal sonography and saline infused sonography in the evaluation of menorrhagia. Int J Gynecol Obstet 2003; 83:45-52. A cost-effectiveness analysis of six diagnostic strategies based on transvaginal ultrasound, saline infusion sonography and hysteroscopy. Despite weaknesses of the constructed decision model, this is an important paper outlining methodology for determining optimal diagnostic work up based on clinical outcomes.

Cost-effectiveness of the use of transvaginal sonography in the evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding
-
Dijkhuizen FP, Mol BW, Brolmann HA, Heintz AP. Cost-effectiveness of the use of transvaginal sonography in the evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding. Maturitas 2003; 45:275-282. An excellent paper describing a decision analysis examining four diagnostic strategies for investigating postmenopausal bleeding based on initial investigation with transvaginal ultrasound or endometrial biopsy. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (cost per life year gained) are produced for each approach compared with expectant management and sensitivity analyses performed around disease prevalence and endometrial thickness cut-offs.
