23. Ogden JA, Alvarez RG, Marlow M: Shockwave therapy for chronic proximal plantar fasciitis: a meta-analysis. Foot Ankle Int 2002, 23:301-308. This is a metaanalysis type study that finds an overall beneficial effect of ESWT in PF. Of note, only one of the 20 studies met the criteria for a randomized, masked, controlled study. However, the results of this study did concur with the general consensus of ESWT being helpful for PF.
24. Buchbinder R, Ptasznik R, Gordon R, et al.: Ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave therapy for plantar fasciitis - a randomized controlled trial. JAMA 2002, 288:1364-1372. This is a very well-designed Australian study that generated much controversy because it failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect of ESWT on PF. This study used patients with only 6 weeks of symptoms and did not have a true control group.

Plast Reconstr Surg 2003, 111:2265-2272. This is an interesting experimental Turkish study with rats. They likened diabetic neuropathy to a compartment syndrome that needed to be released. The positive results demonstrated in this study engendered hope in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
