9. For suitable values of the coefficients of the coupling terms to smectic order, layering can be induced simultaneously with the onset of Q ij. We note, that the same type of analysis as for the coupling to smectic order also applies to that for columnar order. In addition to induced orientational order, smectic layering can be simultaneously induced via terms coupling the smectic order parameter ψ to T ijk and Q ij. Chiral smectic phases, such as smectic C *, also have helix structures with only one hand.

31. We note that one can consider equally well Q ij ∇ k T ijk instead of T ijk ∇ k Q ij giving the same physical results.
32. That the cubic cross terms vanish identically can also be easily explicitly verified using, for example, the Fel representation [3]. As contributions to the energy are good scalars, if they vanish for one representation, they must vanish for all.
