Gilliland FD, Berhane K, Islam T, et al. Obesity and the risk of newly diagnosed asthma in school-age children. Am J Epidemiol 2003; 158:406-415. This paper underscores the importance of obesity in children showing an association between BMI and new-onset asthma. The risk of new-onset asthma was increased in boys and stronger than in girls, and also greater in non-allergic children.

Body-mass index as a predictor of incident asthma in a prospective cohort of children
-
Gold DR, Damokosh AI, Dockery DW, Berkey CS. Body-mass index as a predictor of incident asthma in a prospective cohort of children. Pediatr Pulmonol 2003; 36:514-521. This important longitudinal study examined prospectively the association of BMI and incident asthma over 5 years in six US cities. An increased risk of new asthma diagnosis in girls was associated with higher BMI at study entry and greater increase in BMI during follow-up.

Persistence of asthma symptoms during adolescence: Role of obesity and age at the onset of puberty
-
Guerra S, Wright AL, Morgan WJ, et al. Persistence of asthma symptoms during adolescence: role of obesity and age at the onset of puberty. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2004; 170:78-85. This longitudinal study reported that 58% of children with frequent wheeze and 30% with infrequent wheeze at school-age before puberty had wheezing persisting after puberty, hereby challenging the commonly held paradigm that asthma usually remits during adolescence. Obesity was one risk factor for persistent wheeze.

Leptin: Does it have any role in childhood asthma?
-
Guler N, Kirerleri E, Ones U, et al. Leptin: does it have any role in childhood asthma? J Allergy Clin Immunol 2004; 114:254-259. This study investigated the potential role of leptin in the association of obesity and asthma. The authors suggest that leptin may present a mechanistic explanation for atopic asthma. Finding high serum leptin levels in asthmatic boys could explain the higher prevalence of childhood asthma in the male sex.

Effect of weight reduction on respiratory function and airway reactivity in obese women
-
Aaron SD, Fergusson D, Dent R, et al. Effect of weight reduction on respiratory function and airway reactivity in obese women. Chest 2004; 125:2046-2052. This prospective study is one of the few interventional studies that demonstrated that weight loss for up to 6 months can improve lung function in obese women. Interestingly, the improvement seems to be independent of changes in airway reactivity.
