Results from a large prospective randomized trial comparing early amniocentesis and late CVS. Samplings were performed in a few centers by highly experienced operators. Significant statistical power to detect fetal loss and abnormality differences between methods was limited to the 13th week of gestation.

Retrospective investigation of a total of 68 119 mid-trimester amniocentesis cases from 29 well documented studies of more than 1000 cases each. The study provides data on fetal loss risk and documents direct fetal injuries.

A significant increase in third-trimester complications related to the amniotic cavity and membranes was found in the mid-trimester amniocentesis series.
