Use of transesophageal echocardiography to guide cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation
-
Klein AL, Grimm RA, Murray RD, et al. Use of transesophageal echocardiography to guide cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation. N Engl J Med 2001;344:1411-20. A multicentre, randomised trial of 1222 patients evaluating the use of TOE for guiding management of patients with atrial fibrillation. A strategy of using TOE for guiding short term anticoagulation followed by electrical cardioversion was associated with lowering of haemorrhagic events, o shorter time to cardioversion, and a greater rate of successful restoration to sinus rhythm.
