Much of the literature reports C. sanguinolenta being a member of the Asclepiadaceae family (see ref 5); however, some of the literature reports that Cryptolepis sp. are members of the Periplocaceae family. \Vhile some botanists consider the Periplocaceae a separate family from the Asclepiadaceae (see ref 6), this position is somewhat controversial. At this point, C. sanguinolenta may more correctly be considered to be a member of the subfamily Periplocoideae of the Asclepiadaceae family (see refs 7 and 8).
