Human papillomavirus 18 and rapidly progressing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
-
Woodman CBJ, Collins S, Rollason TP, et al. Human papillomavirus 18 and rapidly progressing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Lancet 2003; 361:40-43. This paper suggested that cytological changes associated with HPV-18 infection might understate the severity of underlying disease and this feature should therefore be considered as it could compromise the effectiveness of screening programmes in reducing the frequency of HPV-18 associated cancers.

For the IARC Multicentric Cervical Cancer Study Group: Effect of oral contraceptives on risk of cervical cancer in women with human papillomavirus infection: The IARC Multicentric Case-Control Study
-
Moreno V, Bosch FX, Munoz N, et al. For the IARC Multicentric Cervical Cancer Study Group: effect of oral contraceptives on risk of cervical cancer in women with human papillomavirus infection: the IARC Multicentric Case-Control Study. Lancet 2002; 359:1085-1092. This study concluded that long-term use of oral contraceptives could be a cofactor that increases the risk for cervical cancer by up to fourfold in women who are positive for HPV DNA. It recommends that extra effort be made to include this group of women in cervical screening programmes.

Cervical cancer and the use of hormonal contraceptives: A systematic review
-
Smith JS, Green A, de Gonzalez AB, et al. Cervical cancer and the use of hormonal contraceptives: a systematic review. Lancet 2003; 361:1159-1167. This paper acknowledges the increased risk of cervical cancer with long term contraceptive use but suggests that the public health implications of these findings depend largely on the extent to which the observed association remains long after the use of the hormonal contraception has ceased. This, they conclude, could not be evaluated properly from the published data so far.

Role of parity and human papillomavirus in cervical cancer: The IARC Multicentric Case-Control Study
-
Munoz N, Franceschi S, Bosetti C, et al. Role of parity and human papillomavirus in cervical cancer: the IARC Multicentric Case-Control Study. Lancet 2002; 359:1093-1101. This paper concluded that high parity increased the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix among HPV positive women. A general decline in parity might therefore partly explain the reduction in cervical cancer recently seen in several countries.

Human papillomavirus DNA testing as an adjunct to cytology in cervical screening programmes
-
Lorincz AT, Richart RM. Human papillomavirus DNA testing as an adjunct to cytology in cervical screening programmes. Arch Pathol Lab Med 2003; 127:959-968. This paper concluded that HPV DNA testing was a more sensitive indicator for prevalent high grade CIN than either conventional or liquid based cytology. It observed that one double-negative HPV DNA and Pap test indicated better prognostic assurance against risk of future CIN3 than three subsequent negative conventional Pap tests and may safely allow for the screening interval for such low risk women to be increased.
