Biopsies were not performed on normal-appearing glands. Only one patient demonstrated postoperative hypoparathyroidism.

Preoperative ultrasound decreased the mean operating time from 113 to 97 minutes (P < 0.05) in this study. Costs were equivalent because of the cost of the ultrasound. All patients underwent bilateral neck exploration. If a unilateral approach had been used, cost savings may have been significant.
