Palliative venting gastrostomy in malignant intestinal obstruction
-
Brooksbank MA. Palliative venting gastrostomy in malignant intestinal obstruction. Palliat Med 2002; 16:520-526. This retrospective clinical study reports on the experience of palliative venting gastrostomy in an integrated acute teaching hospital and hospice-based palliative care service over a 7-year period (1989-1997). All patients had advanced and incurable cancer with intra-abdominal spread. Palliative venting gastrostomy was shown to be a well tolerated and effective means of abolishing, or substantially alleviating, vomiting.

Quality of life and length of survival in advanced cancer patients on home parenteral nutrition
-
Bozzetti F, Cozzaglio L, Biganzoli E, et al. Quality of life and length of survival in advanced cancer patients on home parenteral nutrition. Clin Nutr 2002; 21:281-288. Sixty-nine patients with advanced cancer enrolled in a program of HPN in six different Italian centers were prospectively studied as regards nutritional status, length of survival and quality of life. All of these patients were severely malnourished, almost aphagic and beyond any possibility of cure. The authors concluded that HPN may benefit the limited percentage of patients who may survive longer than the time allowed by a condition of starvation and depletion. The quality of life of those patients who survive longer than 3 months seems to remain stable.

Ethical and legal issues in nutrition support of the geriatric patient: The can, should and must of nutrition support
-
Barrocas A, Yarbrough G, Becnel PA, Nelson JE. Ethical and legal issues in nutrition support of the geriatric patient: the can, should and must of nutrition support. Nutrition in Clinical Practice 2003; 18:37-47. This is an excellent review paper covering nutritional aspects in the geriatric patient. Although not directed at cancer patients, many of the ethical issues discussed in this article should also be discussed for cancer patients.
