This is one randomized study showing oral intake in 40 patients undergoing abdominal surgery and treated with a multimodal program or conventional care.

Lancet 2002; 359:1812-1818. This is a very interesting study on the effects of the restrictive versus conventional approach to perioperative fluid therapy, indicating that this routine may have substantial implications for postoperative outcome.

This is an excellent large multicenter study on the outcome from EDA compared with opioid treatment postoperatively, although not in a multimodal program.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 2002; 282:E650-E656. This is an interesting animal study on the effects of inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 derived prostaglandins on endotoxin induced anorexia.
