The Italian national elections of 13 May 2001
-
'Demise' is a problematic term with regard to the Lega Nord. While its electoral support has declined significantly from the high point of 10.1 per cent in 1996 to 3.9 per cent in the May 2001 national election, it still retains considerable power as a member of Berlusconi's ruling coalition in control of some key ministries, as will be discussed below. See Gianfranco Pasquino, 'The Italian national elections of 13 May 2001', Journal of Modern Italian Studies, vol. 6, no. 3, 2001, 371-87.

note
-
While Italy's Alleanza Nazionale (National Alliance) is a formidable far-right party and, currently, a key coalition partner in Berlusconi's government, and while it also embraces its own style of anti-immigrant politics, its ideological roots in Fascism (or 'post-Fascism') sets it outside the parameters of populism, even if it is important to acknowledge its contemporary incorporation of populist tendencies.
