14. The proposed mechanism involves an equilibrium of the intermediates (13, 14 and 15). The intermediate (15) is key to the ring opening process with propionic acid. If the N-3 nitrogen is blocked as the benzyl group (19) the reaction does not proceed. Chemical equations presented.
15. Different solvents were examined in the benzylation of the imidazolutidine. The amide solvents proved to be the optimal for the desired regioselectivity.
