Oxalate-degrading enzymes from Oxalobacter formigenes: A novel device coating to reduce urinary tract biomaterial-related encrustation

Watterson JD, Cadieux PA, Beiko DT, et al. Oxalate-degrading enzymes from Oxalobacter formigenes: a novel device coating to reduce urinary tract biomaterial-related encrustation. J Endourol 2003; 17:269-274. Won the first prize essay at the 20th World Congress of Endourology. Coated silicone discs were implanted into rabbit bladders and those encoated with the enzyme from the gut colonizing bacterium, Oxalobacter formigenes, resisted encrustation compared with control discs. This may lead to enzyme-encoated stents which will reduce encrustation and allow longer indwelling times.
