    • All 12 elections had 435 districts except for the 1960 election, which had 437 due to the interim representatives assigned to Hawaii and Alaska. Additionally, the early elections include the "at-large" and "multiple-member" districts that were eventually eliminated by the Supreme Court rulings of the mid-1960s. Vote totals from the District of Columbia are not represented here, as they do not factor into control of the House. The votes of the slate of electors from Alabama in 1960 and 1964 are treated as Democratic votes. Finally, a few southern states did not record the number of votes cast in unopposed elections in a handful of races. In each of these cases, 1 took the average vote totals from the other districts in those states and used that average as an estimate of the votes cast for the Democratic candidates in those cases.
