Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in childhood depression: Systematic review of published versus unpublished data
-
Whittington CJ, Kendall T, Fonagy P, et al. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in childhood depression: systematic review of published versus unpublished data. Lancet 2004; 363:1341-1345. This review compares and contrasts published data with unpublished data, suggesting the former were more favourable than the latter. When the data are combined, all antidepressants reviewed (except for fluoxerine) had poor risk-benefit profiles.

Efficacy of sertraline in the treatment of children and adolescents with major depressive disorder: Two randomized controlled trials
-
Wagner KD, Ambrosinin P, Rynn M. et al. Efficacy of sertraline in the treatment of children and adolescents with major depressive disorder: two randomized controlled trials. JAMA 2003; 290:1033-1041. This paper reports a combined analysis of two identical trials of sertraline, with the authors suggesting the drug was effective and well tolerated. However, data not reported (but published later by the MHRA) on remission were less favourable, and data on suicide attempt/ideation indicate a potential increased risk.

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of citalopram for the treatment of major depression in children and adolescents
-
Wagner KD, Robb AS, Findling RL, et al. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of citalopram for the treatment of major depression in children and adolescents. Am J Psychiatry 2004; 161:1079-1083. This study is one of two trials of citalopram (the other remains unpublished), with the authors suggesting that the drug reduces depressive symptoms and is well tolerated. These results should be interpreted cautiously given that the larger unpublished trial data are unfavourable both in terms of efficacy and safety.

Fluoxetine, cognitive behavioural therapy, and their combination for adolescents with depression: Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS) randomized controlled trial

Treatment for Adolescents With Depression Study Team. Fluoxetine, cognitive behavioural therapy, and their combination for adolescents with depression: Treatment for Adolescents With Depression Study (TADS) randomized controlled trial. JAMA 2004; 292:807-820. This is the first study to examine the efficacy of an antidepressant combined with a psychological intervention to treat depression in adolescents. The results favour the combined therapy and suggest this is an important area needing further study.
