The value a close to unity has been reported in SOLE R. V., MANRUBIA S. C., BENTON M. and BAK P., Nature, 388 (1997) 764. However, the original 56 data points should be interpolated to produce power law behavior and a depends rather substantially on the detailed procedure such as the number of (interpolated) data points and the cutoff frequency. We have attempted various different procedures, to conclude that the most reliable value of α lies in the range 1.2 to 1.6.

Note the similarity to the finite-size effects: Any system in nature as well as in numerical study is in principle finite, and accordingly the relaxation time is finite, albeit long, even in the reversible case. Still scale invariance is observed in practice, as demonstrated in figs. 1-3.
