Muscle dysfunction and effective rehabilitation of knee osteoarthritis: What we know and what we need to find out
-
Hurley MV: Muscle dysfunction and effective rehabilitation of knee osteoarthritis: What we know and what we need to find out. Arthritis Care and Research 2003, 49:444-452. A review of the scientific literature primarily focusing on strength training for individuals with knee OA. The author raises some excellent questions to consider for improving the effectiveness of strengthening programs. Some of these considerations include adding balance and functional retraining activities to programs and considerations for improving compliance and cost effectiveness of programs.

Agility and perturbation training for a physically active individual with knee osteoarthritis
-
Fitzgerald GK, Childs JD, Ridge TM, et al.: Agility and perturbation training for a physically active individual with knee osteoarthritis. Phys Ther 2002, 82:372-382. A case report providing the rationale and a thorough description of interventions used to improve dynamic knee stability in a 73-year-old active female with bilateral knee OA. The case illustrates how interventions traditionally used for young, physically active individuals can be modified for use in older individuals with knee OA who also wish to remain physically active.

-
Kerrigan DC, Lelas JL, Goggins J, et al.: Effectiveness of a lateral-wedge insole on knee varus torque in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2002, 83:889-893. A pretreatment, posttreatment examination of the effects of placing a 5° and 10° lateral wedge in the shoe on knee adduction moments in patients with medial compartment knee OA. The wedges reduced the adduction moment at the knee, possibly reducing stress on the medial compartment.

Quadriceps strength and osteoarthritis progression in maligned and lax knees
-
Sharma L, Dunlop DD, Song J, et al.: Quadriceps strength and osteoarthritis progression in maligned and lax knees. Ann Intern Med 2003, 138:613-619. Study that examines the relationship between baseline measures of quadriceps strength, passive varus/valgus knee laxity, and knee alignment on the progression of radiographic knee OA. The authors conclude that strong quadriceps may be harmful in individuals with higher degrees of laxity and knee malalignment.
