8. Butler G, Hope T. Manage your mind: the mental fitness guide. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1995. A self help book based on CBT principles. Suitable only for patients willing to accept a diagnosis of depression or anxiety.
9. O'Malley PG, Jackson JL, Santoro J, et al. Antidepressant therapy for unexplained symptoms and symptom syndromes. J Fam Pract 1999;48:980-90. Systematic review providing evidence for the use of antidepressants for functional symptoms.
10. Malleson A. Whiplash and other useful illnesses. Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press, 2002. Entertainingly written although sometimes polemicol look at the medicolegal industry, me development of "new illnesses", and the effect all this has had on symptom reporting and disability.
11. Crimlisk Hl, Bhatia K, Cope H, et al. Slater revisited: 6 year follow up study of patients with medically unexplained motor symptoms. BMJ 1998;316:582-6. Drives a nail in me coffin of studies from the 1960s that said neurologists often got the diagnosis of functional motor and sensory symptoms wrong.
