    • This can be realized by periodic altering of different metal (or metal alloys) layers. In principal, fabrication of such structures may be based upon different methods, including electron/ion beam milling, electron/x-ray lithography, etc. Indeed, we consider modulation of dielectric permittivity only due to simplicity. The nature of periodicity does not influence the qualitative picture of described resonance effects.

    • For the in-plane diffraction only this polarization is responsible for the SPP excitation. Thus, one can easily examine the solution for an arbitrary polarized incident wave by expanding it to s (TE) and p components. Owing to the fact that diffraction of these components is independent, some relevant problems can be considered separately. Evidently, diffraction of the s component can be examined by means of the ordinary perturbation theory for the small permittivity modulation and does not lead to anomalous transparency in the s channel.
