In 1970, a fellow graduate student, who was in the process of completing his doctorate in English, was offered a position at the University of Missouri. A prestigious publication accepted an essay. At various times during the next two years, the author checked with the editor, who assured him that everything was in order. Eventually, it came to pass that the editor resigned and the piece was rejected. The author threatened to sue, and the sponsoring association's attorney re-accepted the piece contingent upon cooperation with the new editor, who offered suggestions for revision. These were so excruciatingly detailed and extensive that the author believed the editor was trying to dissuade him from continuing. But he did, and the essay finally appeared in print
