    • The first oral presentation was made at the Fall Symposium; see Kobayashi, S.; Shoda, S.; Kashiwa, K. Polym Prepr Jpn 1989, 38, 3005. Internationally, I first orally presented at the 33rd IUPAC International Symposium on Macromolecules (Montreal, Canada) in Session 1.8.5 on July 13,1990. After my talk, I received many questions. Some in the audience seemed skeptical about the results; a major concern was why the hydrolysis enzyme acted as a catalyst for the polymerization of the monomer to produce synthetic cellulose and not as catalyst for the cleavage of the glycosidic bond.
