It was found that Zr-based alloys containing Pd (e.g., Zr-Ni-Cu-Pd system having the inhomogeneous chemical interaction with remarkably different negative enthalpies of mixing, Zr-Pd: -91, Zr-Ni: -49, Zr-Cu: -23, and Cu-Pd: -14 kJ/mol) do not require oxygen (the critical amount of oxygen content, 0.4%) from icosahedral phase formation [B.
