R.P. Feynman, Phys. Rev. 56, 340 (1939); H. Hellmann, Einfuhrung in die Quantumchemie (Franz Deuticke, Leipzig, 1937), p. 285. The usual statement of the theorem is that if a Hamiltonian H(λ) depends on a parameter λ, the energy shift E(λ) for that Hamiltonian satisfies ∂E(λ)/∂λ = 〈ψ(λ)|∂H(λ)/∂λ|ψ(λ)〉. If one performs a unitary transformation so that H(λ) = exp(iλU)H(0)exp(-iλU), uses the theorem and then sets λ to zero, one finds ∂E(0)/∂λ ≡ 0 = i〈[U,H(0)]〉, since there can be no energy shift from a unitary transformation. Our quantity Δ in Eqs. (6) and (21) is given by this relationship.
