    • Note that in n=1 with a 50/50 BS (R=1/2) one is in this critical case. This is due to the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect [C. K. Hong, Z. Y. Ou, and L. Mandel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 2044 (1987)]. Photons will always leave the BS in pairs and thus never just one photon emerges into mode 4. The critical cases for incident photon numbers higher than 1 correspond to a generalized HOM-style interference effect.
