Sports Med. 29(5):2001;567-574 Sandra Martelli (Empoli, Italy, 02-22-1964) received the Laurea in mathematics in 1987 from Pisa University. She worked in algebra and applied mathematics at Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa University, 1988) image processing in SELENIA research unit (Pisa, 1989), robotics at Scuola Superiore S. Anna (Arts Lab, Pisa, 1990-1992), computer-assisted surgery and ACL modelling at TIMC (Grenoble University, 1993-1994). She joined the Biomechanics Lab. at Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli in 1990, where she is currently engaged in the development of computer-assisted surgery, treatment of medical images, computer simulations and knee biomechanics. She is member of the International Society of Biomechanics, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the International Society of Computer-Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery, the Società Italiana di Chirurgia assistita da calcolatore, and collaborates with several European universities. Francesca Acquaroli (born in Padua, Italy on 8th August 1970) received the Laurea in Mechanical Engineering Laurea Degree in 1999 at the University of Padua. She worked on knee biomechanics and kinematics of TKR (total knee replacement) systems during her thesis work. Since March 2000 to March 2002 she worked at the Biomechanics Lab. at Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli in Bologna, here she was involved in the study of the knee anatomy and kinematic. Since late 2002 she has worked at GE Oil & Gas Nuovo Pignone in Florence, Italy. Stefano Zaffagnini (Lugo, Italy, on September 20th, 1962) received the Laurea in Medicine in 1987 from Bologna University, his professional "Abilitazione" in 1987, and specialization in Orthopaedics in 1992. Since 1990s he has worked at Rizzoli Hospital, both in the clinical orthopaedic department and at the research center. He worked at the University of Bologna, in Faenza Hospital, he was visiting fellow at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Barcellona. He has published 110 papers on national or international magazines, presented 150 studies at national or international conferences and he is collaborating with EU and in international research projects. He is member of SIOT, SITRAS, SICG, AAOS, AOSSM, ESSKA, ICRS.
