    • Initial steps of Shigella infection depend on the cholesterol/ sphingolipid raft-mediated CD44-IpaB interaction
    • This study determined that interaction between Shigella and the host cell via the IpaB-Cd44 complex occurs in lipid rafts. More importantly it showed that although Shigella lacks adhesins it can still interact productively with the host through additive low affinity interactions with clustered receptors.

    • Anthrax toxin triggers endocytosis of its receptor via a lipid raft-mediated clathrin-dependent process
    • This study shows that anthrax toxin forces the association of its receptor with lipid rafts, although the receptor is not initially a raft resident. This association is followed by a clathrin-mediated uptake of the toxin, showing that raft dependence does not preclude entry via clathrin coated pits.

    • This study shows that bacterial infection of intestinal cells can lead to the upregulation of MICA, a major histocompatibility complex class I-related protein playing a critical role in innate immune responses. Studying diffusely adherent Escherichia coli, it was found that MICA upregulation was mediated by the interaction between the adhesin AfaE and its cellular receptor, the GPI-anchored protein CD55.

    • Salmonella type III effectors PipB and PipB2 are targeted to detergent-resistant microdomains on internal host cell membranes
    • This study describes a new Salmonella effector, PipB2, targeted to peripheral vesicles and in an amino-terminal-dependent manner to Samonella-containing compartments. Importantly, it shows for the first time type III effectors associated with detergent-resistant membranes in intracellular compartments.
