Uropathogens and urinary tract concretion formation and catheter encrustations
-
Hedelin H. Uropathogens and urinary tract concretion formation and catheter encrustations. Int J Antimicrob Agents 2002; 19:484-487. This is a great review of the correlation between pathogens and stone formation. The paper raises interesting questions for further research.

Visualization of Proteus mirabilis within the matrix of urease-induced bladder stones during experimental urinary tract infection
-
Li X, Zhao H, Lockatell CV, et al. Visualization of Proteus mirabilis within the matrix of urease-induced bladder stones during experimental urinary tract infection. Infect Immun 2002; 70:389-394. This model uses urease-negative Proteus spp. which could be used in the future to prevent struvite precipitation.

Staghorn calculus endotoxin expression in sepsis
-
McAleer I, Kaplan G, Bradley J, Carroll S. Staghorn calculus endotoxin expression in sepsis. Urology 2002; 59:601. This case report documents that endotoxin can be present in the stone itself despite low colony counts of bacteria in the urine. Endotoxemia may actually be more important than bacteremia in the pathogenesis of urosepsis.
