    • We define the MR as (Rmax-Rsat)/ Rsat, where Rmax is the maximum resistance at zero field and Rsat the resistance value at saturation of the giant MR effect.

    • The resistance of the multilayer is of the same order of magnitude as the contact resistance, which is determined by comparing different multilayer thicknesses. Also the pillar height is relatively small compared to the width w, which gives rise to a nonuniform current distribution in the pillar. Ohm's law gives for our geometry (see inset of Fig. 1) that (V+-V-) w2 propto ( w/L )/ sinh ( w/L) with L typically 2 3 μm. This dependence was checked independently by simulations based on the finite element method. Quoted MR values are extrapolations for w → 0 and typically are a factor 1.1 1.2 higher than the actual measured value for the smallest pillar in each series.

    • This is in good agreement with the result of the comparison of our CPP MR data with the Bauer model (Ref. 7), from which we find for the ratio of the scattering lengths, averaged on bulk and interface scattering, that l downarrow / l uparrow = 6.4; see G.E.W. Bauer, M.A.M. Gijs, S.K.J. Lenczowski, and J.B. Giesbers (to be published).
