The Roman traveller and chronicler Pliny travelled to the Gulf during the first century of the Christian calendar and described a river at the lower end of the Gulf, which he named Cynos and which is widely believed now to be the creek which runs through the heart of Dubai.

Before 1833 Dubai was part of Abu Dhabi Emirate. In 1833 the Al-Maktoom family (part of the Bani Yas, the ruling family of Abu Dhabi) was able to annexe Dubai from Abu Dhabi and declare it an independent emirate under their rule
