Phase field models can provide a more rigorous treatment of a diffuse step region, but we believe the two-region model captures several essential features in a very simple way. See, e.g., O. Pierre-Louis, Phys. Rev. E 68, 021604 (2003). Recently, Pierre-Louis and Metios (unpublished) have used negative permeability coefficients to analyze a growth-induced instability on Si(111).

note
-
This result is independent of f and holds under much more general conditions, as shown by an exact solution of a ID model in which adatoms have field-biased jumps between discrete lattice sites over barriers of different heights in the terrace and step regions. See 19.

T. Zhao, J. D. Weeks, and D. Kandel (unpublished). If the local equilibrium boundary condition in the center of the step region is relaxed, a mapping to a general sharp-step model with permeable steps results.
