July-December
-
Ernest Sutherland Bates, "Thorstein Veblen," Scribner's Magazine 94 (July-December, 1933): 356. The reference is to Joseph's interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams first of seven lean cows devouring seven fat cows, then of seven thin ears of corn devouring seven full ears, as God's warning that Egypt would experience seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine (Genesis 41). As a metaphor for Veblen's seven-year retirement, Bates' biblical reference applies only imperfectly, for, unlike Pharaoh, Veblen used his seven lean years to prepare for the future and had not prepared for the "famine" at hand. Be that as it may, there is an elusive biblical quality to this period of Veblen's life, lived aesthetically in pursuit of enlightenment from deep within the Christian tradition. Our thanks to Professor James A. Brundage, Department of History, University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS), and to Rabbi Margaret Holub of the Mendocino Coast Jewish Community (Caspar, CA), for identifying the Old Testament source of this reference.

For details on the purchase of the Menlo Park property, see the following correspondence in Carleton College's Thorstein B. Veblen Collection: Ellen R. Veblen to T. B. Veblen, Halcyon, CA, 18 June 1923, Box 1, folder 14; T. B. Veblen to Ellen R. Veblen, Detroit Harbor, WI, 21 August and 10 September 1923, Box 1, folder 1. Veblen did purchase a small piece of property on La Honda Ridge, west of the Stanford University campus, on which he erected a rustic shelter, as well as a 15-acre lot on Washington Island in Wisconsin, where he built a two-room cabin and separate study, but none of these structures could be considered a "house" in the Hammurabian sense.

Their letters from this period appear not to have survived but they are noted in Andrew's daybooks. We speculate on their content from context, which remains, of course, only speculation. We do note a pattern, however, in the frequency of letters exchanged between the two brothers, which increases noticeably on those occasions when Thorstein confronts academic problems for which Andrew can be of assistance and decreases thereafter.

Dorfman, Excelsior Diary for 1889, ibid., p. 77. Dorfman suggests that Strong's opposition to Veblen stemmed from the latter's agnosticism. However, we find that surmise less persuasive than Veblen's violation of tribal custom by spurning his in-laws' offer of employment with the Santa Fe. Admittedly, we skate here on the thin ice of speculation, but not as thin, we think, as Dorfman's.

The precise chronology here remains cloudy. As Updegraff recalled events: "It was the arrival of little Johnnie Byrne D. while [the Davenports] were summering on Cape Cod in 1914, that finally ousted Thors and me from our comfortable home and perquisites." (Updegraff to Dorfman, 30 September 1935, p. 28.) But Updegraff was obviously mistaken, inasmuch as Veblen married Ann Bradley in the summer of 1914 and, when they returned to Columbia that fall, they rented a house of their own. Dorfman, for his part, states that Veblen wrote The Instinct of Workmanship "while living in the home of his colleague and former student, Walter W. Stewart" and that "by February 1913 [he] had completed the draft."

chapters five, six, and the bulk of chapter seven in the summers of 1911 and 1912 while camping in Oregon and Colorado; and the book's remaining twenty-six pages back at the Davenports' in the winter of 1913. Updegraff, in turn, recalled that Veblen was writing The Instinct of Workmanship when he first met him at the Davenports' in the fall of 1912. (Updegraff to Dorfman, 30 September 1935, p. 29.) Whatever writing on the manuscript Stewart may have observed would have been revisions of an already completed draft, most likely in the spring of 1914. Stewart was awed, Dorfman tells us, by the fact "that Veblen had such a systematic command of his material that he sat down and wrote steadily without consulting any literature."

Maude Radford Warren to Joseph Dorfman, [date?]. Dorfman Papers, Box 64. This is the only known instance of Veblen commenting on his private life with anyone other than his most trusted confidants, e.g., Davenport, Wesley Mitchell, Sadie Hardy Gregory, perhaps Isador Lubin and Leon Ardzrooni. He was decidedly not given, in Updegraff's words, "to babbling comment on his private affairs." (Updegraff to Dorfman, 30 September 1935, p. 30.) Maude Warren's mention of Veblen's bout with double pneumonia refers to the winter of 1909-10 when Veblen fell ill while visiting Babe and her daughters near Grangeville, Idaho, recovering only through Babe's heroic efforts. Ms. Warren could only have learned of this episode from Veblen himself or one of the Davenports, inasmuch as details-or even the fact-of that fateful sojourn were not generally known even among Veblen's acquaintances. For a firsthand account,
