The Citizen Audit is a stratified, clustered, random sample of adults in Great Britain aged 18 or over. Respondents were selected in three stages: at the first stage, 101 local authorities in England, Wales and Scotland were selected. For the face-to-face part of the survey three postal districts were selected randomly in each authority, and then in each postal district 20 households were selected at random. For the mail survey, 238 names and addresses in each local authority were selected randomly. Field work took place between September 2000 and May 2001. 3,140 face-to-face interviews were completed (a response rate of 62%) and 9,023 completed postal questionnaires were returned (a response rate of 38%). In this article the data from the face-to-face survey only are used.
