    • An electric field applied to a gold substrate can, depending on the intensity, perturb the electronic structure of the metal, thus inducing changes in the optical properties: electroreflectance (ref 35). To verify whether the differences observed in Ψ and Δ are not merely due to electroreflectance of the gold substrate, measurements were performed on bare gold substrates at potentials corresponding to the oxidized and reduced states of the monolayer films. The resulting differences in Ψ and Δ are shown in Figure 7 by curve E. At an energy of 3 eV (413 nm), the electroreflectance of gold is the smallest (δΨ = 0° and δΔ = -0.1°), thus the contribution of the films to the change in optical properties is maximal.
