The cellular distribution and relative abundance of mRNA encoding HKα1 were examined in control and potassium-deplete rat kidney, using in-situ hybridization and competitive polymerase chain reaction. The results suggest that chronic potassium restriction is associated with modestly enhanced expression of gastric isoform, but that this apparent adaptation is confined to cortical segments.
