Meta-analysis of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome trials testing low tidal volumes
-
Eichacker PQ, Gerstenberger EP, Banks SM, et al.: Meta-analysis of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome trials testing low tidal volumes. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2002, 166:1510-1514. This meta-analysis raised specific concerns about the control group in the ARMA trial not representing current practice. It analyzed all the randomized controlled trials of low tidal volume ventilation and provided data to support the idea that patients in the control group of the ARMA trial may have been placed at increased risk.

Meta-analysis of tidal volumes in ARDS
-
Eichacker PQ, Banks SM, Natanson C: Meta-analysis of tidal volumes in ARDS [letter]. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2003, 167:798-800. This letter is an in-depth response to the ARDS Network criticisms [13asterisk inside a circle signasterisk inside a circle sign, 14asterisk inside a circle sign, 15asterisk inside a circle sign] of the meta-analysis of the low tidal volume trials performed by Eichacker et al. [5asterisk inside a circle signasterisk inside a circle sign]. It provides an analysis to support the existence of current practice for tidal volume selection in patients with ARDS.

Brower RG, Matthay M, Schoenfeld D: Meta-analysis of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome trials. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2002, 166:1515-1517. This letter outlines criticisms of the meta-analysis of Eichacker et al. [5asterisk inside a circle signasterisk inside a circle sign] from the ARDS Network investigators. It provides a detailed argument to support the lack of standard care in the ventilation of patients with ARDS.
