The force we are concerned with here is the intercoil force (which by symmetry is directed along the z axis of Fig. 1(a). The intracoil forces are comparable to those in standard solenoids and are contained by the tensile strength of the wire and the epoxy in which the wire is potted.

The superconductivity observed in magnet structures fabricated from Grade 5 alloy titanium (not described in this article) is suppressed by the magnetic fields generated when the magnet is fully energized. However as the magnet current is decreased (necessary for evaporative cooling of the trapped atoms), the superconductivity reappears, expelling magnetic flux from the trapping region in an unpredictable fashion and degrading the quality of the trap.
