Modified pellet or crumble durability was estimated by adding 5 3/4 in. hex nuts to the 500-g sample. This procedure estimated the durability of pellets or crumbles expected after conveying and handling at the feedmill and the poultry house.

Unmodified pellet or crumble durability was estimated by adding only 500-g samples of pellets or crumbles to the tumbling tester. This procedure estimated the durability of pellets or crumbles that were produced immediately after manufacturing.

note
-
A sample of pellets or crumbles were sieved using a Tyler No. 6 screen for pellets or a Tyler No. 12 screen for crumbles to remove fines. Sieved samples (500 g) of pellets or crumbles were added in duplicate to an air-tight tumbling tester and tumbled for 10 min at 50 rpm. Each sample was then rescreened, and the remaining pellets or crumbles were weighed. Percentage of durability was calculated as follows: (weight of pellets or crumbles after tumbling/weight of pellets or crumbles before tumbling) x 100.
