Waters is Chief of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Research Section at NIOSH and chairs the NIOSH-sponsored National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) team responsible for developing a national occupational research agenda for prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. He is a certified professional ergonomist and holds advanced degrees in Engineering Science and Biomechanics from the University of Cincinnati. As a researcher at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for the past 15 years, Dr. Waters has published more than 30 papers and written more than 10 chapters on manual material handling and prevention of low back disorders. His primary research has focused on development and evaluation of easy to use ergonomic exposure assessment methods, including the revised NIOSH lifting equation. He holds adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati and in the Systems and Industrial Engineering Department at The Ohio State University.
