The fuel protests of 2000: Implications for the environmental movement in Britain
-
In the second week of September 2000 networks of farmers and hauliers protesting against high fuel prices launched a series of pickets of fuel depots in the UK which stopped most distribution of petrol within a few days. This was part of a wave of similar protests across Europe, which had begun in France in early September. See Doherty, B., Paterson, M., Plows, A. and Wall, D. (2002) 'The fuel protests of 2000: implications for the environmental movement in Britain', Environmental Politics, Vol. 11, No. 2, pp.165-173.

For example, of the 35-40,000 people employed in the UK biotechnology industry, only 3,000 are in agriculture (Hansard, "Parliamentary Answer for Mr Battle to Joan Whalley", 28th June 1999: Column: 39). Public opinion has been in support of medical uses of biotechnology even whilst it has been fiercely opposed to agricultural biotechnology (MORI, "Poll Conducted for Greenpeace on GM Crops and Organic Food", June 1999), and environmental groups have similarly not been hostile to medical uses. See for example, Friends of the Earth (UK), 'Genetically Modified Foods: Adding to the Debate', at http://www.foe.org.uk, viewed 12/11/01.

note
-
Compare for example the statements by the British Government Panel on Sustainable Development, Sixth Report (London: Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, 2000), or the British Medical Association's report, The Impact of Genetic Modification on Agriculture, Food and Health: An Interim Statement (London: BMA, 1999), both of which were highly critical of the Government's Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes.
