Arrogance
-
Now, of course, one may argue that I come from a privileged position in that I am a physician and do not feel pressured by the recommendations of my child's physicians. But I hope I am smart enough to realize that when my child is a patient, that she is the patient. See, for example, F.J. mgelfinger, "Arrogance," New England Journal of Medicine 303, no. 26 (1980): 1507-11; R.C. Wasserman et al., "Health Care of Physicians' Children," Pediatrics 83, no. 3 (1989): 319-22. How I may be privileged is that I have found physicians for my children who are willing to take on the additional burdens of caring for a physician's family, and that these physicians are willing to take the time to get to know us and to treat my children as "real" patients. See, for example, S.A. Schneck, "'Doctoring' Doctors and their Families," Journal of the American Medical Association 280, no. 23 (1998): 2039-42.
