    • 2 composites. J Am Ceram Soc 1995, 78:1507-1512. This paper reports on the first particulate ceramics observed to have distinct macroscopic nonlinear stress-strain response due to microcracking. Usually, cracking is confined around a critical flaw which, while toughening the material, is not reflected in macroscopic behavior. Similar behavior in alumina/aluminum-titanate composites has been reported but no actual data has been shown.

The current understanding of fatigue failure is that fatigue strength reduction is due to a lengthening of the effective fiber gauge length sampled in the composite as the interface fatigues during sliding, and is thus purely a result of the statistical length dependence of fiber strength.
