Contact fatigue of a silicon carbide with a heterogeneous grain structure
-
Padture NP, Lawn BR: Contact fatigue of a silicon carbide with a heterogeneous grain structure. J Am Ceram Soc 1995, 78:1431-1438. In a number of recent papers [3-5], these authors and many coworkers have demonstrated tough behavior in heterogeneous glass ceramics, alumina, and silicon nitride, and have developed hybrid layered materials which combine the advantages of both toughened materials and monolithics.

2 composites
-
2 composites. J Am Ceram Soc 1995, 78:1507-1512. This paper reports on the first particulate ceramics observed to have distinct macroscopic nonlinear stress-strain response due to microcracking. Usually, cracking is confined around a critical flaw which, while toughening the material, is not reflected in macroscopic behavior. Similar behavior in alumina/aluminum-titanate composites has been reported but no actual data has been shown.

An exact closed form solution for the fragmentation of Weibull fibers in a single filament composite with applications to fiber reinforced ceramics

J Mech Phys Solids 1995, 43:1551-1585. The fragmentation problem has resisted exact analysis for decades, and this beautiful work eliminates the need for the many approximate analyses and computer simulations developed over the years. The exact results refine approximate results in [25].

-
Evans AG, Zok FW, McMeeking RM: Overview No. 118: Fatigue of ceramic matrix composites. Acta Metall Mater 1995, 43:859-875. The current understanding of fatigue failure is that fatigue strength reduction is due to a lengthening of the effective fiber gauge length sampled in the composite as the interface fatigues during sliding, and is thus purely a result of the statistical length dependence of fiber strength.
