The discourse on language
-
Foucault speaks of the function of 'true discourses' in terms of 'the will to truth': 'True discourse, liberated by the nature of its form from desire and power, is incapable of recognising the will to truth which pervades it; and the will to truth, having imposed itself upon us for so long, is such that the truth it seeks to reveal cannot fail to mask it'. Michel Foucault, 'The discourse on language', The archaeology of knowledge, trans. Sheridan, Alan, (New York: Dorset Press, 1972), p.217.

Although I have not mentioned race in the context of this paper, the gender performances of the DDEBRP members, (including my own), are imbricated with what Frankenberg terms 'whiteness': 'First, whiteness is a location of structural advantage, of race privilege. Second, it is a 'standpoint', a place from which white people look at ourselves, at others, and at society. Third, 'whiteness' refers to a set of cultural practices that are usually unmarked and unnamed'. Ruth Frankenberg, White women, race matters: The Social construction of whiteness, (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1993), p. 1.
