An unfortunate side-effect of the explosion of central desert acrylic painting during the 1980s and 1990s is that the American anthropologist, Nancy Munn's, understanding of Aboriginal iconography as 'writing' has been overshadowed by Australian art teacher and instigator of the 'Papunya' dot-painting school, Geoff Bardon's, response to it as 'art'.
15. The oral/text distinction has also proved useful to those opposed to bilingual education to prop up the dubious argument that English literacy must be purchased at the expense of literacy within Indigenous systems of communication and representation.

Reynolds has spent a professional lifetime attempting to ascertain the historical truth about Australian race-relations.
