note
-
An unfortunate side-effect of the explosion of central desert acrylic painting during the 1980s and 1990s is that the American anthropologist, Nancy Munn's, understanding of Aboriginal iconography as 'writing' has been overshadowed by Australian art teacher and instigator of the 'Papunya' dot-painting school, Geoff Bardon's, response to it as 'art'.

The oral/text distinction has also proved useful to those opposed to bilingual education to prop up the dubious argument that English literacy must be purchased at the expense of literacy within Indigenous systems of communication and representation.

Henry Reynolds, Why Weren't We Told?A Personal Search for the Truth about Our History (Penguin) Melbourne, 1999. Reynolds has spent a professional lifetime attempting to ascertain the historical truth about Australian race-relations. Among many other things to have been disclosed by Reynolds are: the inconsistency of Australia's colonial 'settlement' with contemporary international law; the violence of the frontier; the fragility of the case against the recognition of continued Indigenous sovereignty after Mabo and the degree of dissension about Indigenous issues both past and present within the non-Indigenous community.

I later found out that Jane Elliot was the American author of the race awareness workshop and video, Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes, which uses performance to expose white people to the experience of being black in a racist culture.
