In most applications, the light fields are applied in a pulsed scheme (pulse length typically 1 μs-1 ms) requiring the frequency difference to have a linewidth smaller than the Fourier transform limit of the pulse duration, thus giving a fixed relative phase during the pulse.

In our setup, no narrow-bandwidth rf source (such as a synthesizer) is required to produce the phase-locked laser light. It is only needed when the frequency difference has to be stable in addition.
