Compare also the fluctuating reputation of M. I. Rostovtzeff, a twentieth-century "modernizer" of the ancient economy, currently receiving full-length biographical treatment (see B. D. Shaw in Journal of Roman Studies, 82 [1992], 216-28) and being cited approvingly by Italian archaeologists.
