In the structure of 1, n - 1 instead of n has been used to describe the number of monomeric units incorporated into the chain through polymerization (degree of polymerization) so that n corresponds to the number of fluorene units in a chain. This is because the number of fluorene units in a chain is more important in discussing the formation of the π-stacked conformation of 1 than the degree of polymerization. For 2-5, the number of fluorene units corresponds to the degree of polymerization.
