1. The Foundation, which is based in Strasbourg, exists to promote collaborative work, mainly within Europe, in the Sciences and Humanities. It is supported by the leading Academies and research-funding bodies of the majority of central and west European countries.
2. This is a version of a lecture given at the Central European University of Budapest on 12th December 1996 on the invitation of Professor Janos Bak.
