    • Ironically, both academies were named for proponents of coeducation. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, the daughter of former slaves, was a early pioneer for African-American education. In 1904, she founded a school for girls in Daytona Beach, Florida, Daytona Literary and Industrial School for Training Negro Girls, which she eventually merged with a boys' school in 1923.
