A zwitterionic intermediate with a positive charge on germanium and a negative charge on carbon was not considered likely given the lack of experimental evidence for heavy Group 14 cations in solutions (see Science, 263, 983-985 (1994). A transition state with this charge distribution probably would not have led to scrambling of the stereochemistry in the addition of trans-deuterostyrene.
